How to Configure a Subdomain and Custom Domain

Published:

Configure a Learnly subdomain or connect your own custom domain to provide learners with a branded learning experience. Learnly also manages SSL certificates automatically, ensuring your training portal is secure and accessible.

Before You Begin

  • You must have Organization Admin access.

  • If you're using a custom domain, you'll need access to your DNS provider to create a CNAME record.

Configure a Learnly Subdomain

Step 1: Open Domain Settings

Navigate to 'Global Settings' and click 'Domains'.

1

Step 2: Open the Subdomain Tab

Enter your preferred organization subdomain. Your complete Learnly URL is automatically generated and displayed below.

Do not include http:// or https://.

Example: If you enter acme, your organization URL becomes https://acme.learnly.biz.

2

Configure a Custom Domain

If you want learners to access Learnly using your own domain (for example, training.company.com), you can configure a custom domain.

Step 3: Open the Custom Domains Tab

Enter your custom 'Domain Name' in the given field.

3

Step 4: Configure Your DNS

After adding the domain, Learnly displays the required DNS configuration.

Create the CNAME record with your DNS provider using the values provided on the page.

Once the DNS record has been added, return to Learnly.

Step 5: Validate Your Domain

Click 'Validate' to verify your DNS configuration.

Once validation is successful:

  • Domain Status changes to Active.

  • SSL Status changes to Active.

  • An SSL certificate is automatically issued and managed by Learnly.

DNS changes may take some time to propagate depending on your DNS provider.

4

Domain Status

After validation, Learnly displays the status of your domain.

  • Domain: Active indicates your custom domain is correctly configured.

  • SSL: Active confirms that HTTPS encryption has been successfully enabled.

  • The DNS configuration details remain available if you need to verify or troubleshoot your setup later.

Troubleshooting

The domain doesn't validate

  • Verify that the CNAME record exactly matches the values shown in Learnly.

  • Wait for DNS propagation to complete, then click Validate again.

SSL status remains inactive

  • Ensure the DNS configuration is correct.

  • SSL certificates are generated automatically after successful domain validation, but issuance may take a few minutes.

Learners can't access the custom domain

  • Confirm that both Domain and SSL statuses show Active.

  • Clear your browser cache or try opening the site in a private browsing window.

You have successfully configured a Learnly subdomain or custom domain. Your learners can now access your training portal through a branded, secure URL.
