QTI Import and Export in Learnly Assessments

Published:
Who this is for: Org admins, team managers, and authors who want to import questions into a Learnly assessment from another LMS or authoring tool, or export Learnly questions to another compatible system.

QTI (Question and Test Interoperability) is a standard format for transferring assessment questions between compatible learning platforms and assessment tools.

Learnly supports QTI 1.2, QTI 2.1, and QTI 3.0 imports, and exports assessments in QTI 2.1 format.

Where to Find QTI Import/Export

  • Go to Training Studio → Assessments.

  • Open the assessment you want to work with.

  • Click the QTI Import/Export tab.

Shortcut: From the Assessments page, click the ⋮ menu on an assessment card and select 'QTI Import/Export'.

1

You must create the assessment before importing questions. You can import questions into an empty assessment.

Import a QTI Package

You can import questions from a supported QTI package into an existing Learnly assessment.

Step 1: Select the QTI File

On the 'QTI Import/Export' tab, click 'Select QTI File' and choose the QTI package you want to import.

QTI packages must be provided as a .zip file.

2

Step 2: Start the Import

After selecting the file, the button changes to 'Import <file name>'. Click the button to start the import.

3

Step 3: Review the Import

Depending on the contents of the QTI package, Learnly may show a review step before importing the questions.

A review step appears when:

  • The package contains 'topic tags' that need to be mapped to Learnly Categories.

  • The same QTI package was previously imported into the assessment.

If a review step appears, review the information and click 'Import N questions' to continue.

Nothing is added to the assessment until you confirm the import.

If no review is required, Learnly continues with the import automatically.

Step 4: Check the Import Summary

After the import finishes, Learnly displays a summary of the results.

Depending on the outcome, you may see:

  • Green: Import complete

  • Yellow: Import finished with skipped items

  • Red: Import failed

  • Warnings: Some metadata needs attention, but valid questions can still be imported

For example, a package may contain questions as well as unsupported intro or outro screens. These unsupported items are skipped while the supported questions are imported.

4

From the summary, you can:

  • Click Review imported questions to review and publish the imported questions.

  • Click Categorize N questions to assign Categories to imported questions.

You can also check the Recent Jobs section to see whether an import completed or failed.

Imported Questions Are Unpublished

Imported questions are added as 'Unpublished'.

  • This means learners cannot see the imported questions until you publish them, even if the assessment itself is already published.
  • Importing questions does not change the assessment's own Published or Draft status.
  • After importing, review the questions and publish them from the Questions tab.
  • For more information, see Reviewing and Publishing Assessment Questions.

Importing the Same QTI Package Again

If you try to import a QTI package that was already imported into the same assessment, Learnly displays a warning before adding the questions again.

The warning includes the date of the previous import.

5

Step 5: Download the Package

Your browser downloads the QTI package as a .zip file.

6

You can use the exported package with another QTI-compatible LMS or assessment tool.

If an Import Fails

If an import fails, Learnly does not save any questions from that package.

You can safely try the import again.

If your connection drops during the process but the import actually completed, Learnly returns the existing result instead of adding the questions twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I import questions into a new assessment directly from the Assessments page?

No. Create the assessment first, then open its QTI Import/Export tab and import the package.

You can also use the ⋮ menu on an assessment card to go directly to QTI Import/Export.

Are imported questions graded like questions created in Learnly?

Yes. After import, supported questions become regular Learnly assessment questions.

Does Learnly support adaptive (CAT) QTI tests?

Learnly imports the supported questions from a CAT package, but the adaptive rules aren't imported. Learners take the imported questions as a standard assessment.

Can I import the same QTI package twice?

Yes. Learnly warns you if the package was previously imported into the same assessment. You can choose to import the questions again.

Are learner results included when I export an assessment?

No. QTI exports contain assessment questions and supported question metadata, not learner results. Use Reports to view learner results.
